Managed AEO and SEO

Found on Google. Named by ChatGPT.

I run SEO and answer engine optimization as one managed program: the pages, the technical fixes, the markup and the mentions that AI assistants read.

  • One engineer, no handoffs
  • Your site, your CMS, your data
  • A plain monthly report

Two games now

Ranking and being quoted are different jobs.

  • Google ranks pages. AI assistants quote passages.

A page can rank fifth and never be quoted, or rank nowhere and be cited every day. I plan for both.

  • Every engine picks different favorites.

On my own site Google rewards the tutorials, while Copilot cites the comparison and how to pages. One blended report would have hidden that.

  • Most SEO reports stop at rankings.

A rank tracker cannot tell you whether ChatGPT or Perplexity names you. I test a fixed set of buyer questions every month and log what comes back.

So I run one program for both.

A made up company on an example domain. The list of changes is the real work I do.

Example answer, made up company

A buyer asks

What is the best invoicing software for a small design studio?

The assistant answers

Most small design studios pick Billwise or Tallyfox. Billwise suits freelancers on a tight budget, and Tallyfox fits studios that also run payroll.

Sources it shows

  • billwise.example/pricing
  • tallyfox.example/studios
  • reviewhub.example/invoicing

The work behind the change

  • A page that answers the question in its first two sentences
  • Service and FAQ schema that match what the page shows
  • A fair comparison page that names the alternatives
  • An accurate listing on the review site AI already cites

Switch to “After the work” to see what changes.

What it is

Managed AEO and SEO, in one sentence

Managed AEO and SEO is a monthly service where one engineer improves how search engines rank your pages and how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot describe and cite your brand.

  • GoalSEO aloneRank pages for keywordsManagedRank on Google and be named in AI answers
  • Measured bySEO alonePositions and clicksManagedPositions, clicks, citations on a fixed question panel, AI referral visits and leads
  • ContentSEO aloneBuilt around keywordsManagedBuilt around buyer questions, entities and short answers that can be quoted

It does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it, because the same fundamentals feed both.

What I run

Six jobs, every month

  • 01

    Measure

A fixed panel of buyer questions tested in each AI assistant every month, plus Search Console, Bing and GA4. You see who is named, who is cited and where you are missing.

  • 02

    Fix

Crawl and render checks, robots rules for AI crawlers, canonical and sitemap clean up, page speed. Anything that stops a page being read gets fixed first.

  • 03

    Write

New and refreshed pages built to be quoted: a direct answer first, then proof, then detail. Comparison, how to and definition pages that match real questions.

  • 04

    Mark up

Schema for your organization, products, services, FAQs and how tos, matched to what is visible on the page and never stuffed.

  • 05

    Earn

Mentions on the sources AI assistants already read: reviews, directories, communities and partner pages. Slow, honest work with no link schemes.

  • 06

    Report

One plain monthly report and a call: what moved, what did not, and what I do next.

How it goes

Baseline first, then build, then compound

  1. Baseline and fixes, illustration

    01 · Month 1

    Baseline and fixes

    • Test your buyer questions in every assistant
    • Fix the crawl and markup blockers
    • Agree the question map and the first pages
  2. Build, illustration

    02 · Months 2 and 3

    Build

    • Publish and refresh the answer pages
    • Add schema and internal links
    • Start earning mentions on trusted sources
  3. Compound, illustration

    03 · Month 4 on

    Compound

    • Re test the panel against the baseline
    • Double down on the pages being cited
    • Retire what is not working

AI answers change from week to week, so I judge progress by the trend across the whole panel, never by one lucky answer.

What you get

Work you can read, check and keep

  • Monthly question panel

Your buyer questions tested in each assistant, with the answers and sources logged.

  • Technical fixes shipped

Done in your CMS, or written up for your developer with the exact change.

  • Answer pages

New and refreshed pages, in an agreed number each month.

  • Schema, validated

Markup deployed and checked against the page it describes.

  • Off site mentions

A plan and the outreach for the sources AI assistants trust in your market.

  • Dashboards

Search Console, Bing and GA4 set up so AI referral visits are visible.

  • Monthly report and call

Plain numbers, what changed and the next month in writing.

  • You own all of it

Content, markup, reports and dashboards live in your accounts.

How I report

What I measure, and what I will not promise

In every monthly report

  • Citation rate across the question panel, month on month
  • Which pages are cited, and by which assistant
  • Branded search and direct visits
  • AI referral sessions in GA4
  • Leads and revenue wherever you can tie them back

Not promised

  • A named spot in any AI answer. Nobody can promise that.
  • A ranking date.
  • Results from link schemes, fake reviews or hidden text. I do not use them.

Tools

Your own data, not a black box

Everything runs through accounts you own, so the numbers can be checked.

  • Google Search Console
  • Bing Webmaster Tools
  • GA4
  • Microsoft Clarity
  • Direct testing in each assistant
  • Your CMS
  • Schema validators

Fit

Is this right for you?

A good fit

  • You sell something buyers research before they buy
  • Your site already earns some search traffic
  • You want one accountable person instead of an agency chain
  • You can approve changes to your own site

Not a fit

  • You want to buy links or reviews
  • You need a guaranteed result by a fixed date
  • The site is not yours to edit
  • You want a one time audit only (that is a different, smaller job)

Questions

Before you ask me

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your pages easy for AI assistants and search engines to read, trust and quote, so that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews name your brand when someone asks a question you should answer.

Be the answer your buyers read.

Tell me what you sell and who should find you. I will say plainly whether managed AEO and SEO fits, and what the first month would cover.
