AI voice agent cost calculator: what a minute really costs
Advertised rates cover part of a minute. This prices the whole minute on Vapi, Retell AI, Bland, ElevenLabs Agents and OpenAI direct: platform fee, speech to text, model, voice, phone line, concurrent lines and HIPAA. Then it puts the total next to a receptionist and an answering service at the same volume. Every price links to the page I read it on.

Where the lines cross
No platform overtakes another between 500 and 50,000 minutes on these stacks.
Against people, at the same 4,500 minutes
A median receptionist costs $4,611 a month loaded, which is $0.44 for every paid minute even if they never leave the phone. Covering 4 callers at once at your peak takes 4.
Ruby publishes plans up to 500 minutes and no overage rate, so it is left out above that.
No black box
Exactly how the numbers are worked out
Minutes a month = calls x average minutes
Carrier rate = inbound share x $0.0085 + outbound share x $0.014 (Twilio, United States)
Peak lines = Erlang B: fewest lines with at most a 1% chance every line is busy,
load = busiest hour calls x average minutes / 60
Platform cost = per minute rates x minutes + plan fees + numbers + extra lines + HIPAA
Vapi = ($0.05 hosting + STT + model + voice + carrier) x minutes
+ lines above 4: $10 each, or $29 Core (10 lines) + $10 each above 10,
whichever is cheaper, + $2,000 if HIPAA
Retell AI = ($0.055 infra + model + voice + telephony) x minutes
+ $2 a number, + $8 a line above 20, HIPAA $0
Bland = plan rate x minutes + plan fee + carrier x minutes
(cheapest plan whose limits fit: Start 100 calls a day and 10 at once,
Build 2,000 and 50, Scale 5,000 and 100)
ElevenLabs Agents = cheapest plan fee + $0.08 x minutes over the plan
+ model at cost x minutes + carrier
GPT-Live 1 = ($0.05 voice + backend model + carrier) x minutes
gpt-realtime-2.1 = per minute: caller tokens x $32/M + agent tokens x $64/M
+ replayed history x (cached share x $0.40/M + rest x $32/M) + carrier
replayed history per minute = (caller + agent tokens) x (turns per call minus 1) / 2
on your inputs: 240 + 600 tokens, 4,620 replayed
Per minute all in = platform cost / minutes
Receptionist = ceil(minutes / 10,400 paid minutes) x wage / 0.687 / 12
Answering service = cheapest published plan: fee + extra minutes x overage rate
Volume chart = the same formula at each volume; busiest hour scales with minutesThe starting values are examples, not a recommendation: 1,500 calls at 3 minutes, all inbound, the cheapest stack on each platform and a busiest hour of 12 calls. The realtime talk shares, turn rate and cache share are my assumptions too. Replace them with your own call logs before you choose anything. Prices are list prices for self serve accounts, read on Oct 10, 2026; enterprise contracts differ.

What this number does not include
- Building and maintaining the agent: prompts, tools, integrations, testing and monitoring. The platform bill is the smaller line for most first year projects.
- Minutes a human spends on transferred calls, and Bland’s transfer time rates.
- ElevenLabs burst pricing above your plan’s concurrency, and its 95% discount on long silences.
- Text tokens for system instructions and tool calls on OpenAI direct, which add to the audio token cost.
- Taxes, regulatory carrier fees, toll free numbers and international calling.
- Synthflow, Voiceflow and other vendors without a self serve price. Synthflow states enterprise contracts from $30,000 a year.

Voice agent pricing, answered
On the developer platforms I priced on Oct 10, 2026, an inbound minute costs about $0.090 to $0.155 all in, once speech to text, the language model, the voice and the phone line are added (Vapi, Retell AI and ElevenLabs pricing pages, plus Twilio's United States rates). Bland's flat Start rate comes to $0.149 with the carrier. The headline rates vendors advertise usually cover only part of that minute.
