Free tool
Free AEO audit for your website
I built this audit to answer one question before any content work starts: can ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google read your site, index it and trust what they find? It fetches your live pages the way a crawler does and reports eight sections, each finding with the fix I would make.
Only need to know which AI bots your robots.txt lets in? Use the AI crawler check, which tests the bots alone.
Prefer to run audits from your own terminal? I wrote up Claude SEO, an open source audit tool for Claude Code.
Want the fixes done for you instead? See how I run answer engine optimization.
The quick check is free and needs no account: a score and the top findings for your site. The full report needs a free account, which you open with a code sent to your email and no password. It lists every finding in all eight sections with its fix, keeps your past runs so you can run the audit again after a change, and gives you a PDF copy.
Coverage
What it checks
AI crawler access
Reads your robots.txt the way GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot do, and shows which of them may fetch your pages. It flags rules you never wrote for a bot, where the catch all group decides for it.
Indexability
Looks for noindex in the robots meta tag and in the X Robots Tag HTTP header, and checks the canonical tag: missing, duplicated, relative, pointing to another domain or to a page that redirects.
HTTPS and redirects
Confirms the site answers over HTTPS and that the plain HTTP address redirects there, then follows the redirect chain hop by hop and flags loops and long chains.
Structured data
Parses every JSON LD block, lists the schema types it finds and flags blocks that fail to parse. It checks for an Organization or Person node with sameAs links, which helps a machine tie your site to your name.
Content extractability
Compares the text in the raw HTML with what a browser would show. Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so a page that only fills in its text in the browser can look empty to them.
llms.txt
Checks whether you publish an llms.txt file and whether it is well formed. llms.txt is a proposed format, and no major AI company has confirmed that its crawlers read it, so treat this finding as optional.
Sitemap
Finds your XML sitemap through robots.txt or the usual address, checks that it loads and parses, and whether the pages it lists carry a last modified date.
Core Web Vitals
Asks Google PageSpeed Insights for loading, responsiveness and layout stability. It shows field data from real Chrome visitors when Google has enough of it, and lab data otherwise, and says which one you are looking at.
Method
How it works
- 1
Enter your site
Type your home page or any page you care about. The audit opens on my free tools app.
- 2
The app fetches it like a crawler
It reads robots.txt, the page itself, the sitemap and a small sample of the pages listed there. It only fetches public web addresses and refuses private network addresses.
- 3
Each section gets a status
Every finding shows what the app saw, why it matters in one sentence and how to fix it. Nothing is estimated: if a fetch fails, you see the error and no score for that part.
- 4
Fix, then run it again
With a free account your past runs are saved, so you can rerun the audit after a change and compare.
Example
What the report sections look like
An illustration of the layout with sample wording. It is not a result for any real site.
AI crawler access
Needs a fixOne row per bot with its verdict and the robots.txt line that decided it.
PerplexityBot has no group of its own, so the catch all rule that blocks every bot also blocks it. Add a group that allows the pages you want quoted.
Indexability
PassedThe robots meta tag, the robots HTTP header and the canonical tag of the page you entered.
The page has no noindex directive and its canonical tag points to itself over HTTPS.
Content extractability
Needs a fixHow much readable text the raw HTML carries before any script runs.
The raw HTML holds the navigation and footer but not the article. Render the main text on the server so crawlers that skip JavaScript can read it.
llms.txt
For informationWhether the file exists and follows the proposed format.
No llms.txt file was found. It is an unconfirmed proposal, so this is optional.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is an AEO audit?
AEO means answer engine optimization: making sure AI assistants and AI search results can find, read and cite your pages. An AEO audit checks the technical side of that, the same plumbing classic SEO depends on, plus the parts that matter more to AI crawlers, such as text that is readable without JavaScript.
How is this different from the AI crawler check?
The AI crawler check answers one question: which AI bots your robots.txt lets in. This audit includes that and adds indexability, HTTPS and redirects, structured data, server rendered text, llms.txt, your sitemap and Core Web Vitals.
Will passing this audit get my site cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
No tool can promise that. The audit removes the technical reasons an answer engine might skip your pages. Whether it quotes you still depends on what your pages say and who else covers the topic.
Why does the audit treat llms.txt as optional?
llms.txt is a proposal for a plain text guide to your site. No major AI company has confirmed that its crawlers read it, so I report whether you have one and leave the decision to you.
Do I need an account?
No. The quick check with a score and the top findings is free without an account. The full report with every fix needs a free account, which you open with a code sent to your email. There is no password.
Where do the Core Web Vitals numbers come from?
From Google PageSpeed Insights. When Google has enough visits from real Chrome users it reports that field data; otherwise it runs a lab test. The report labels which one you are seeing.
