Passage Ranking

The short answer

Passage ranking means a system scores specific sections of a page against a question instead of scoring the whole page as one unit. A short, clear passage can be picked even from a long page.

Why Passage Ranking matters

Assistants quote passages. A strong answer buried in the middle of a vague page can be missed, while the same answer under a clear heading can be found.

How to measure or use it

Look at which passage an assistant actually quotes and compare it with what you intended. Check that each key question has a heading and a direct answer beside it.

How I handle it

I write each important section so it still makes sense when lifted out on its own: the question as a heading, the answer in the first two sentences, then the proof.

Passage Ranking questions

Do I need to shorten my pages?

No. You need to structure them so each section can stand alone.

How long should a passage be?

Short enough to quote, usually two or three sentences for the answer and then the supporting detail.
