The short answer
Query fan out is when an AI search system breaks a single question into several related sub queries, runs them, and combines the results into one answer. Google has described this approach for AI Mode.

Why Query Fan Out matters
A buyer’s one question can trigger many searches you never see. Your page may be retrieved for a sub question rather than the main one, so covering the related questions matters.
How to measure or use it
Ask the main question, list the follow up and comparison questions it implies, and check whether your site answers each of them.
How I handle it
For each important question I map the sub questions around it, such as price, alternatives, timing and who it is for, and make sure the site has a clear page or section for each.

Query Fan Out questions
Can I see the sub queries?
Some assistants show a few of their searches, but not all of them. I infer the rest from the question.
Does this mean I need many more pages?
Not always. Often a clear section on an existing page is enough, as long as it answers the sub question directly.
