Freshness Signals

The short answer

Freshness signals are the clues that tell a system a page is current, such as a visible updated date, a changed sitemap date, up to date facts and recent mentions elsewhere. For fast moving topics they can decide which source is chosen.

Why Freshness Signals matters

For prices, product versions and news, a stale page can lose to a newer one with the same answer, so I keep those pages current.

How to measure or use it

Compare the age of the pages you want cited with the age of the sources being cited for the same question.

How I handle it

I only change a date when the content actually changed, and I refresh pages whose facts, prices or product versions have moved.

Freshness Signals questions

Can I just update the date?

No. A date that changes without the content changing is misleading, and I never do it.

Which pages need refreshing most?

Pages with prices, version numbers, comparisons and anything a buyer would check before spending money.
