The short answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named or cited inside the answer an AI assistant or search engine gives, not only listed in the results. It covers content, technical setup, markup and the mentions elsewhere that these systems trust.

Why Answer Engine Optimization matters
More questions now end with a written answer instead of a click. If your brand is not in that answer, the buyer may never see your site, however well it ranks.
How to measure or use it
Test a fixed list of buyer questions in each assistant every month and log whether you are named, cited or missing. Pair that with Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 referral data.
How I handle it
I run AEO and SEO as one managed program, because the same foundations feed both: pages that can be crawled, answer a real question and have proof from outside your own site.

Answer Engine Optimization questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. A page that cannot be crawled or does not answer a real question fails in both.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
The aim is nearly the same, and the two labels are used interchangeably. See the entry on AEO, GEO and SEO for the small differences.
