The short answer
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping your content, entities and outside mentions so that generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, include your brand when they write an answer. In practice it overlaps almost completely with AEO.

Why Generative Engine Optimization matters
Generative systems that search the web assemble answers from retrieved passages rather than listing pages, so being the passage that gets retrieved matters more than being the page that ranks first.
How to measure or use it
Use the same question panel as for AEO, and test each assistant separately, because each one picks different sources.
How I handle it
I use GEO and AEO interchangeably when I talk to clients, and I write each page once for both. What changes is the test, which I run in every assistant on its own.

Generative Engine Optimization questions
Do I need separate content for GEO?
No. Clear, well sourced pages that answer a real question serve both.
Why do two names exist?
Different writers coined them for the same shift. Searchers use both, so I use both.
