The short answer
An AI Overview is a summary written by Google’s AI that appears above the normal results for some searches and links to the pages it drew on. A page can appear as a source there even when it does not rank first.

Why AI Overview matters
It changes what the top of the results page looks like, so a page can earn visibility as a cited source without holding the first position.
How to measure or use it
Search your target questions in Google, signed out, and note whether an overview appears and which pages it cites. Search Console counts these clicks inside overall Search traffic, so I also track them with the question panel.
How I handle it
I check the overview for every question in the panel and note which pages Google cites, because they often differ from the pages Bing and ChatGPT choose.

AI Overview questions
Do I need special markup to appear?
Google’s guidance is that the usual search foundations apply: indexable pages, helpful content and accurate markup. There is no separate switch.
Can I limit how my text is used?
Snippet controls such as nosnippet exist, but they reduce your visibility, so decide deliberately.
