Citations

The short answer

A citation is a source that an AI answer names, links to or visibly relies on to support a claim or recommendation. For a brand, being cited is the clearest sign that an assistant treats your page as trustworthy.

Why Citations matters

Citations decide which sites get visibility, and sometimes a visit, from an answer. They also show which third party sources the assistant trusts in your market.

How to measure or use it

Log which URLs are cited for each question in your panel, by assistant. Group them into your own pages, reviews, communities and partner or press pages.

How I handle it

On my own site, Bing Webmaster Tools reported 4.4K citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers across 57 pages between Jul 10 and Oct 8 2026, against 31 Bing clicks. Citations and clicks are different numbers, so I report both.

Citations questions

Are citations the same as backlinks?

No. A backlink is a link between sites. A citation is a source shown inside a generated answer, and it can come from a linked page, an unlinked mention or a retrieved passage.

Can I optimize for citations directly?

Indirectly. You make facts easy to retrieve, publish pages worth quoting and earn mentions on sources the assistants already read.
